Good Relations

The Good Relations section is located within the Council's Equality Unit and its purpose is to improve relations between people in Newry and Mourne who may experience division on the basis of different political, cultural, religious, class or ethnic background.

Newry and Mourne District Council has developed a Strategy and Action Plan for Good Relations which are directed by the objectives set out in the Shared Future Document, The Triennial Action Plan and the Racial Equality Strategy. Over the forthcoming year the External Good Relations Officer and the Internal Good Relation Officer will raise awareness of these objectives in the community and to the staff in the Council. Everyone will be encouraged to play a part in creating harmony in his or her community or work place. The importance of valuing and accepting different cultures towards creating a positive society will be highlighted and groups will be supported to build on what they have already achieved.

A Shared Future Strategy and Racial Equality Strategy

On 27 April 2006 Lord Rooker launched two new action plans aimed at creating not only a shared future for all the people of Northern Ireland but a future free from racial inequalities and hate crime.

Speaking at the launch of the first 'A Shared Future' action plan and the first Racial Equality Implementation Action Plan, the Minister reinforced Government's full and total commitment to the policy on 'A Shared Future':

The key elements in the Government’s drive for a modern Northern Ireland economy are underpinned by an inclusive, shared society. The plans aim to create social and political stability in a shared and peaceful society. One, which is capable of attracting increased inward investment and growing a competitive economy that can take its place on the global stage.

Both plans focus firmly on the work of Government Departments and their agencies within a clear legal and statutory framework, underpinned by Section 75. All commitments have been agreed by departments and signed off by their respective ministers.

The Racial Equality Strategy for Northern Ireland sets out six strategic aims that Government will pursue in eradicating racism and tackling racial inequalities.
